Stephen J. Elder, 78, of Chester, a retired Union Carbide Co. mechanic, died Nov. 12 at Riddle Memorial Hospital.

Born in Lebanon, Pa., Mr. Elder grew up in Delaware County. He was employed by Union Carbide Co. as a mechanic for a number of years before his retirement. Mr. Elder served with the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II.

Husband of the late Kathryn McKinney Elder, he is survived by a son, Daniel Elder of Wallingford; three daughters, Barbara Elder of Wallingford, Patricia Ellingsworth of Aston and Judith Elder of Chester; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He also was the father of the late Michael and Thomas Elder.

The funeral and burial are private and there are no calling hours.
